Parenting Press found many of its 2011 bestsellers on its backlist. Established in 1979 to publish problem-solving books for adults and children,this Seattle publisher  is a family-owned company with almost 100 titles in print.

“The Way I Feel,” Janan Cain’s first book,was published in 2000. Since then, the 32-page hardback became an abridged board book edition for toddlers and a Spanish edition, “Así me siento yo.” In 2011, Cain and writer Steve Metzger created a similar book about traits, “The Way I Act.”

While the continuing popularity of “The Way I Feel” for a decade might be a record for some publishers, the next most popular book on the 2011 Parenting Press bestseller list, “It’s MY Body,”  has been around since 1982. The book tells kids about avoiding unwanted hugs, kisses and touching. It continues to sell hundreds of copies each month—despite the fact that almost no storefront bookstores stock it.

The third on Parenting Press’s bestseller list for 2011 was “The Self-Calming Cards,”  a deck of oversized cards that describe and show how kids (and adults) can calm themselves when they’re anxious, angry or over-excited. Created in 2004, the cards were written by Elizabeth Crary, Parenting Press founder, and illustrated by Mits Katayama, a Northwest artist who was then in his late 70s.

Parenting Press also enjoyed high sales of another 2004 title, “25 Things to Do When Grandpa Dies, Mom and Dad Get Divorced, and the Dog Dies,” written by Yakima parent educator Laurie A. Kanyer. Used extensively by organizations that support military families, this title helps adults who work with kids who are grieving or experiencing loss.

“Something Is Wrong at My House: A Book about Parents’ Fighting,” written by Diane Davis in 1984 and recently updated and revised;

“Living with the Active Alert Child,” first issued by Parenting Press in 1993 and revised in 2003;

“What Angry Kids Need: Parenting Your Angry Child Without Going Mad,” the 2008 book by Jennifer Brown of Bellingham WA and Pam Hopkins of Snohomish WA.

IBPA holds Pub U in San Francisco

The Indepdent Book Publisher Association’s Publishing University 2012 will be held on March 9-10, 2012 in San Francisco, CA.

This will be the flagship IBPA Publishing University for the year.

This year, IBPA will be offering one full scholarship per affiliate group, plus one at large scholarship for a person outside the realistic boundaries of a local affiliate group.

The scholarship includes:
* Full attendance at the IBPA Publishing University
* Networking opportunities with peers and mentors
* Face-to-face access to some of the most respected names in the world of publishing
* A special event bringing together all scholarship recipients
* And so much more!

The affiliate group is asked to collect all the applications, pick their recommended candidate, and send all of the applications received with their recommendation to IBPA by or before February 7, 2012.

Speaker Bio

Gary Marshall enjoys working with creative people including artists, entrepreneurs, small business owners, and people who create new technology. He brings over twenty-six years of experience in business and technology law and litigation, including computer law, Internet law, and art and entertainment law together in one practice.

He is a frequent lecturer on different aspects of intellectual property law at Continuing Legal Education Seminars (CLEs) and writers conferences, and before arts organizations and computer groups. He was a member of the Executive Committee of the Intellectual Property Section of the Washington State Bar Association (WSBA) from 2005 to 2011, and served on the Board of Directors of the Pacific Northwest Writers Conference from 1989 to 1999 and on the Board of Directors of Washington Lawyers for the Arts from 1990 to 1998 (President from 1993 to 1997). He did undergraduate and graduate work at MIT, and obtained his JD and MBA from Stanford University.

Lani Jacobsen, of 74th Street Productions, Seattle, confirmed that The Marvin Bell Celebration will feature original poems from its book Poetry for a Midsummer Night’s Dream, an illustrated collection of love poems published to celebrate Shakespeare’s beloved play.

Mr. Bell, a Guggenheim and NEA fellow, Senior Fulbright Appointee to Yugoslavia and Australia, has recently retired from the faculty of the University of Iowa Writers’ Workshop and served as Iowa’s first Poet Laureate.

Five poems from the book are included in the concert, Being in Love, Five Ohs, How the Lovers Found True Love After All, Like Words, Like Music and To Dorothy.

Seattle publisher ShinShinChez announced  that their latest cookbook, Passion and Palate:  Recipes for a Generous Table, is available now for holiday shoppers. Directions:

From I-5 North, go to the 405 interchange, going south on 405. Take the very first exit (#26). At the end of the exit, go right, heading south to Bothell OR

North on 405, take the last exit (#26), says Bothell/Mill Creek. At the end of the exit, go left and cross over the freeway.

THEN: Go down about 1 mile until you see 240th. There will be a Grease Monkey on your left and new Safeway complex on your right. Go right onto 240th. Go all the way to the end where you will see a big white gate. The gate code will be 4012 or 8643. Follow the signs to the clubhouse.
